What zero air is, and why the grade matters

Zero air is synthetic air prepared so that the things an analyser is looking for are not in it. Ordinary compressed air carries traces of hydrocarbons, moisture and other contaminants, and an instrument fed on that has no honest zero to measure against, so every reading it produces inherits the error.

This is a gas defined by an absence rather than a purity figure. Its value is that the flame ionisation detector sees nothing when nothing is present, which is what makes the numbers on either side of the zero trustworthy.

Zero air is supplied under high pressure and, being air, supports combustion normally. Keep the cylinder secured upright, fit a regulator rated for the pressure, and keep oil and grease away from the valve and fittings.

Questions we are asked about zero air

What is zero air used for?It gives an analyser a clean baseline. It is used to zero process and emissions analysers and as combustion air for flame ionisation detectors, where ordinary compressed air would carry hydrocarbons into the reading.

Do you supply zero air with a certificate?Analysis can be issued with the delivery where your instrument or audit requires it. Tell us at the point of order.

Can I use ordinary compressed air instead?Not for zeroing. Ambient and compressor air carries traces of hydrocarbons and moisture, which is exactly what the instrument is trying to measure.

Do you deliver zero air across India?Yes, from our Bhiwadi plant into Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Haryana and the surrounding region.
